Big Feed – Glasgow

I can’t quite believe it took me so long, but I finally paid a visit to the Big Feed on Saturday. After a few teething issues, the street food social is now regularly drawing in large, but manageable, crowds to their (predominantly) indoor street food market. Olivia and I headed along for opening time on Saturday, and it was already bustling with foodies and families alike.

After a wander round the market, Olivia and I inevitably ended up at Chompsky – our absolute favourite street food vendors. Having never tried their Bánh Mì, we were both excited to order the pork belly filled version, plus a side of Spring Rolls to share. The large baguettes were filled with chunks of delicious, melt-in-the-mouth pork belly and topped with the likes of coriander, sirracha, fresh chillies and peanuts. The sirracha and chillies made for a very spicy dish, and I was very glad I had a bottle of water to hand! The spring rolls were beautifully fresh and crispy, with a perfectly flavoured filling inside. More amazing food from Chompsky – to be honest, we expected nothing less!

Olivia and I opted to get a couple of sides so that we could try a few different vendors. From the simply named Burrito, we selected a portion of Jalapeño Poppers. The nice crispy outer gave way to gooey cheese and a sweeter, rather than fiery, jalapeño. Serving the poppers with sour cream, lettuce and sweetcorn chutney was a nice touch, although the chutney was a bit too sweet for my liking.

Being the lovers of squid that we are, we had to get a portion of Salt and Pepper Squid from ShrimpWreck. The batter had a tendency to fall away from the squid, but overall they squid was well cooked and had a good flavour.

The Crema Caravan

I’ve been trying, and failing, to return to The Crema Caravan since my first visit. Finally, the Big Feed allowed me the chance to do so and I opted for the Rhubarb and Custard Crème Brûlée., whilst Olivia selected the Salted Caramel Brownie version. The custard was as good as I remembered – silky smooth with real vanilla dotted throughout. My rhubarb and crumble topping was also fabulous – perfectly sweetened rhubarb with crunchy crumble, what’s not to love? The chocolate brownie pieces on Olivia’s dessert were gorgeously fudgy but not sickly.

Overall, our visit to the Big Feed was very successful and I’m positive we’ll both be back, probably sooner rather than later.
