Cafe Strange Brew – Glasgow

Brunch. The Instagram-friendly phenomenon sweeping the country – think pancakes, waffles and eggs galore. I am hooked! Unfortunately, so is everyone else, and so attempting to get a seat in any of the popular brunch places can prove difficult on a Saturday morning. So, when dad offered to take me out to brunch on a day off work, I decided to use the opportunity to visit the much anticipated Cafe Strange Brew on Pollokshaws Road.

I think it’s fair to say that Cafe Strange Brew is all about the food – the tiled walls are cracked and stained, the tables and chairs are simple but functional. The food is another story altogether.

Despite planning to have a savoury dish, I couldn’t tear myself away from the day’s special – Brioche French Toast Stuffed with Mascarpone, with Chocolate Panna Cotta, Strawberries and Pistachios. Thick, fluffy slices of sweet brioche were stuffed with smooth mascarpone – although this had the capacity to be thick and cloying, it had melted between the hot bread to leave a smooth, light and creamy filling. The chocolate panna cotta was luxuriously thick and silky, and just sweet enough without being sickly. The plump strawberries and crunchy pistachios were the perfect contrast to the French toast and panna cotta, creating a dish that had the perfect combination of textures and flavours. Delicious!

Dad also made a pretty good brunch selection with his Chorizo Hash. Well cooked chunks of potato were served with smoky chorizo links – it was particularly nice to see that they hadn’t scrimped on this particular element of the dish. The duck eggs were cooked to perfection, with vibrant orange yolks that oozed when cut into. The fried onions on the top of the dish provided the ideal crunch to contrast the chorizo and eggs.

It may have taken me a while to make it to Cafe Strange Brew, but it was well worth the wait. Stunningly presented dishes which tasted impeccable – there’s real skill lurking in that kitchen! I can’t wait to visit Cafe Strange Brew again, no matter how long I have to queue to get in!
